The Cove Inn Pocket Forest
This site on Main St is home to Westport’s first Pocket Forest—a densely planted arrangement of keystone native trees, shrubs, and other plants that imitate the layers of vegetation found in Eastern Temperate Forests.
This innovative planting method, introduced by Dr. Akira Miyawaki, weaves a living tapestry of
biodiversity into urban landscapes.
Even in a small space, the benefits are mighty:
• Increased biodiversity and wildlife habitat
• Cleaner air and carbon capture
• Strengthened climate resilience—through water runoff collection, reduction of the urban heat island effect (where built environments trap heat and raise local temperatures), and improved community wellbeing.
The Cove Inn Pocket Forest is the inaugural project of Westport Pocket Forests,
an initiative of Better Together Circle in partnership with The Cove Inn, FABN, Madden &Co Tree Service, Rideau Roots, and many volunteers and donors.
Be inspired! Pocket Forests can grow anywhere!
Imagine what’s possible in your own backyard, schoolyard, or community space.

Celebrating Westport's Inaugural Pocket Forest!
The Better Together Circle acknowledges that we are on the land that has been inhabited by Indigenous Peoples from the beginning. As settlers, we're grateful for the opportunity to meet, work and play here, and we thank all the generations of people stretching back in time who have taken care of this land. In particular, we gratefully acknowledge the Algonquin (Omàmìwininìwag) Anishnaabeg whose unceded territory this is. BTC is dedicated to taking action towards reconciliation and a harmonious relationship with the land.
